People ask me how it is possible to have a Mexican accent while speaking English when I grew up in Canada. But English wasn’t my first language. I grew up in a MexicanCanadian household speaking Spanish as my first language. My parents were immigrants who came moved to Canada together two years before I was born. They spoke little English and got by with the help of their friend who spoke both English and Spanish. My eventually parents learned how to speak English before I was born but promised each other that when they had a child, they wanted to raise their child speaking Spanish to preserve their culture. And when I was born, that was exactly what they did. I don’t ever regret my parents teaching me Spanish first because it helps me feel close to my Mexican roots while living in Canada. Even though I’ve been made fun of for my accent, I love my accent and would never exchange my culture for anything in the world.
