[Living room. Heather is doing homework at the dining table. Mom walks by]

Mom: Heather, have you finished your homework yet?

Heather: Not quite. But Mom, can I go to the movies with my friends at seven? I already told them I’d be there.

Mom: Only if you finish your homework first.

Heather: But the movie starts in thirty minutes! I promise I’ll do it when I get back.

Mom: Sorry, sweetie. Homework first, then movies.

Heather: Dad! Can I please go to the movies at seven?

Dad: What did your mother say?

Heather: She said I have to finish my homework first, but my friends are waiting for me!

Dad: Then you better finish quickly. Tell you what—if you get it done, you can borrow the car.

Heather: Really? Okay! What time do I need to be back?

Dad: Ten o’clock.

Heather: Can I stay out until eleven?

Dad: Ask your mother.

Heather: Mom, if I finish my homework right now, can I come home at eleven instead of ten?

Mom: Fine. Eleven, but not a minute later.Heather: Thank you! I’ll finish this in like ten minutes!
