SCENE: A modern office break room on a Thursday afternoon. Two coworkers are getting coffee when one asks for help with subway directions.

MAYA: Hey Ryan! Do you have a second?

RYAN: Sure, what’s up?

MAYA: I have a meeting at the Hudson Building tomorrow morning, but I’ve never been there before. Do you know how to get there by subway?

RYAN: Oh yeah, I used to work near there. Where are you coming from?

MAYA: From home, so Upper West Side. Around 72nd Street.

RYAN: Okay, that’s actually pretty straightforward. Take the 1 train downtown from 72nd Street.

MAYA: The 1 train, got it.

RYAN: Yeah, stay on until Times Square. That’ll be about ten minutes. Then you need to transfer to the shuttle train heading east.

MAYA: Wait, hold on. Let me write this down. So, 1 train to Times Square…

RYAN: Right. Then take the shuttle to Grand Central. Get off there, go upstairs, and walk north on Park Avenue for about three blocks. The Hudson Building is on the east side of the street. Big glass building, you can’t miss it.

MAYA: Okay, so 1 train to Times Square, shuttle to Grand Central, then walk north on Park. How long does the whole trip take?

RYAN: From 72nd Street? Probably around 35 to 40 minutes, give or take.

MAYA: And my meeting is at 9 AM tomorrow.

RYAN: Oh, that’s rush hour. The trains will be packed. I’d leave by 8:00, maybe even 7:45 to be safe.

MAYA: Really? That early?

RYAN: Trust me, rush hour in the summer is brutal. Better to get there a little early than to show up late and stressed.

MAYA: Good point. Thanks so much, Ryan. You’re a lifesaver!

RYAN: No problem! Good luck with your meeting!MAYA: Thanks!
