[Classroom. Students are working on essays. Eric raises his hand]

Eric: Mr. Smith, can I please go to the bathroom?

Mr. Smith: Not right now, Eric. You should be working on your essay.

Eric: I know, but I really need to go.

Mr. Smith: You just had a fifteen-minute break. Why didn’t you go then?

Eric: I was getting help from Mrs. Miller with a math problem. I didn’t have time.

Mr. Smith: Ah, okay. That’s a good reason. Go ahead, but come straight back, alright?

Eric: I will. Thanks!

[Eric leaves. A minute later, another student raises their hand]

Student: Mr. Smith, can I go too?

Mr. Smith: Sarah, you went during break. The answer is no. Keep working on your essay.

Sarah: But Eric just went!

Mr. Smith: Eric had a legitimate reason. You can wait until the next break.Sarah: Fine…
