[Mary’s kitchen. Carol is visiting for the first time]

Carol: You have such a nice place!

Mary: Thanks! It’s small, but it’s home.

Carol: And it’s so close to your office, right?

Mary: Yeah, I can walk to work in like ten minutes. I do it even when it rains!

Carol: Lucky! I have to take the bus. It takes forever—about forty minutes.

Mary: Wow, that is long! Hey, I just made some cake. Want to try a piece?

Carol: [takes a bite] Oh my gosh, this is amazing! Do you bake often?

Mary: Usually on weekends. I like having something sweet around the house.

Carol: You’re so talented! I never cook. I’m completely hopeless in the kitchen. My husband does all the cooking.

Mary: Does he enjoy it?

Carol: He does, but when he’s busy, we just go out to eat.

Mary: There are so many good restaurants in the city.

Carol: Too many! We could eat at a different place every night—Chinese on Monday, Italian on Tuesday, Mexican on Wednesday…

Mary: That must get expensive though.

Carol: It really does. I should probably learn to cook!

Mary: It’s honestly not that hard. And way cheaper than eating out all the time.Carol: Maybe you can teach me sometime!

[Mary’s kitchen. Carol is visiting for the first time] [Cozinha de Mary. Carol está visitando pela primeira vez]

Carol: You have such a nice place! Carol: Você tem um lugar tão legal!

Mary: Thanks! It’s small, but it’s home. Mary: Obrigada! É pequeno, mas é lar.

Carol: And it’s so close to your office, right? Carol: E é tão perto do seu escritório, certo?

Mary: Yeah, I can walk to work in like ten minutes. I do it even when it rains! Mary: Sim, posso caminhar até o trabalho em tipo dez minutos. Faço isso mesmo quando chove!

Carol: Lucky! I have to take the bus. It takes forever—about forty minutes. Carol: Sortuda! Eu tenho que pegar o ônibus. Demora uma eternidade—cerca de quarenta minutos.

Mary: Wow, that is long! Hey, I just made some cake. Want to try a piece? Mary: Uau, isso é muito tempo! Ei, acabei de fazer um bolo. Quer experimentar um pedaço?

Carol: [takes a bite] Oh my gosh, this is amazing! Do you bake often? Carol: [dá uma mordida] Ai meu Deus, isso é incrível! Você assa frequentemente?

Mary: Usually on weekends. I like having something sweet around the house. Mary: Geralmente nos fins de semana. Gosto de ter algo doce pela casa.

Carol: You’re so talented! I never cook. I’m completely hopeless in the kitchen. My husband does all the cooking. Carol: Você é tão talentosa! Eu nunca cozinho. Sou completamente sem esperança na cozinha. Meu marido faz toda a comida.

Mary: Does he enjoy it? Mary: Ele gosta?

Mary: That must get expensive though. Mary: Isso deve ficar caro, no entanto.

Carol: It really does. I should probably learn to cook! Carol: Realmente fica. Eu provavelmente deveria aprender a cozinhar!

Mary: It’s honestly not that hard. And way cheaper than eating out all the time. Mary: Honestamente não é tão difícil. E muito mais barato do que comer fora o tempo todo.

Carol: Maybe you can teach me sometime! Carol: Talvez você possa me ensinar algum dia!
